Ultimatum: Your Music Or Me!
Posted June 24, 2009 by SaNa

Hello all. My guitar player, Vince, is got married on Saturday May 10th, 2008. His wife supports him in his music and understands how important it is for him to play. I wish them 70+ years of marital bliss. This is a great occassion.

And, it got me to thinking about all the musicians I've met who had to leave their spouse because he/she didn't approve or they just stopped playing to keep the peace. Boy, that's gotta be tough. I just started playing 10 years ago. Can't imagine someone forcing me to quit. Maybe that's why I'm single. Ha!

Anyhow, how do you handle the ultimatum thing when it comes to your music or other life passion? What are some of your horror stories? How were they resolved? What about your great stories? How did you manage to stay and play?

Spencer Wiggins is a gifted and emotionally powerful vocalist, who cut superb Southern soul singles during the mid-‘60s & 70s. Years later he is still lionized as one of the lost masters of the form by British, Japanese and European enthusiasts of deep soul, according to the All Music-Media Guide. “It’s amazing how much Spencer’s music is treasured and still appreciated”, states his Manager Rita Lawhorn. His Concert Performance will be aired all over the world, thanks to the Internet, this is truly amazing”.

Spencer was born in Memphis, TN, in 1942; his parents had a strong interest in music. While in Memphis, Spencer was a background singer for the late Elvis Presley. “ I learned a lot from the man, he states with a smile, “showmanship, and how to shock the audience”.

In this fertile environment, Spencer first turned professional, formed an R&B vocal group called the Four Stars that featured David Porter. Later he became a noted songwriter. Strong material was cut at the controls of some of the city’s best session players backing him up. Spencer’s is known for the hit records; “Uptight Good Woman”, “Let’s Talk It Over”, “Lonely Man”, “Can We Talk It Over”,” Water”, “Can’t Be Satisfied”, to name just a few of his great hits. He received 5 Star reviews on YouTub.com.

In 1976, Spencer had a spiritual rebirth and turned his back on secular music in favor of gospel. After relocating to Florida, he became a deacon of the New Birth Baptist Church in Miami, and was named director of two of the church’s choral groups. In 1977, he cut a gospel album with the help of Al Green. In 1999 Spencer released a cassette-only EP, “Jump for Jesus”, A full-length gospel album, “Keys to the Kingdom”, was released in 2002 and merged Spencer’s full-bodied vocals and a spiritual message with tracks produced and arranged in contemporary R&B and hip-hop styles.

His new CD release in 2009 is a special brand of soulful blues-gospel music entitled “I’m Going On.” One of the featured songs on the CD is the catchy “What A Friend,” which is a medley of three classic gospel songs sung to a down home gospel- blues beat, as only Spencer can deliver. The British Kent Label released a thorough compilation of Spencer’s work from Goldwax Records, entitled the “The Goldwax Years”, in 2006, 2008, and in 2009, “Spencer Wiggins Various Artist ”, by British Kent Record Label. The Vivid Record Label in Japan had distribution rights of his early music hits. “There is a true following, in Italy, Europe, Japan, and China, their appreciation for his music is astounding”, states his Manager Ms Rita Lawhorn, it’s like a new birth for his genre of music, “Deep Soul”, as they call it”. Spencer deserves a round of applause, and recognition for his contributions to music. Content provided by Phaze One Productions, Mgr.
